Grant Amount: $4,500
Date In Effect: 2026
Schools Impacted: Jr. / Sr. High School

The Science Journal Club at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory offers high school students a unique opportunity to engage with real-world scientific research while developing critical academic and professional skills. Guided by leading scientists and educators, students learn to analyze primary research, present findings with confidence, and engage in thoughtful discussion and inquiry.

Over the course of eight sessions each semester, students are guided by lab scientists and educators to develop the ability to read, interpret, and critically analyze primary scientific literature. They practice presenting research and engage in peer discussion and questioning, and learn to use advanced research databases.

The program includes hands-on exposure through visits to active research labs in chemistry, cancer biology, and neuroscience, allowing students to connect classroom learning with real-world applications. In addition to strengthening scientific literacy, students build transferable skills in communication, collaboration, and evidence-based reasoning.

With space for up to 15 students annually, grant funding ensures that all interested students can participate, regardless of financial background. This program supports the development of curious, confident learners prepared for success in higher education, future careers, and active civic life.
